When Sun sets out on a solo mission to walk the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage trail she knows it will be one of the hardest things she has ever done. But that's what she wants, to choose a mountain and conquer it. On a journey of friendships, awkwardness, and brutal determination she will overcome and discover that the Camino is more than just a road to the end of the world.
The inspiration for Hay
The first time I walked the Camino de Santiago, pilgrims who learned I am a writer asked if I was planning to write about the Camino. I always said no, I was there for an adventure, not inspiration. But inspiration found me and after I got home I realised that I did have a story to tell. That story is Hay.
Hay is an inherently personal story, not only for myself and my family but for the many people I met along the way. Out of respect for the privacy of others, I have changed many details and omitted others altogether. While many of the characters Sun meets on her journey are inspired by people I met on the Camino they are not real- they are impressions and half-remembered conversations patched together with imagination. I have also replaced myself and my family with fictional characters who have very fictional relationships and dramas. However, I hope that I have been truthful to the sense of things and given an honest representation of life walking the Camino de Santiago.
