Trust Your Reader, Sometimes
*There are 19 Easter eggs and 12 bunnies on the shelves behind me. Can you find them all?*
Trust your reader. Trust them to understand what you have written without extensive explanation or info dumps. But, also workshop your writing to find the areas where your readers can’t be trusted at all.
For the sake of brevity, I’ve kept my examples to a minimum in this video. But I have had numerous experiences where critique partners have altogether ignored description that told them a character was disabled, non-white, larger-bodied, or LGBT+. In most cases, they have been happy to learn of the character’s diversity when it is pointed out to them, so it’s not a lack of will to enjoy these characters as they are meant to be.
